Majeda Khouri

Director of the Syrian Sunflower

I came to the UK at the end of 2017, after escaping political persecution for my human rights work in Syria. Away from home without family and friends, I found comfort in feeding the people I lived with. For me, cooking was a way to promote Syria and integrate into society.
I am now on a mission to use my cooking, through classes and catering as I started my own business a year ago, but also to raise the awareness of the Syrian humanitarian crisis.

I was imprisoned in 2015 for helping to feed displaced people arriving in my city from other parts of Syria: I used to smuggle bread to the besieged arias to feed people even though this threatened my life. I couldn’t watch them starve.
